Jang Ja-yeon (January 25, 1980 – March 7, 2009) was a South Korean actress. She is primarily known for being part of the cast of the popular drama series Boys Over Flowers.
Her death by suicide in 2009 brought widespread attention to the issue of sexual abuse and exploitation within the South Korean entertainment industry. Jang Ja-yeon left behind a series of handwritten letters alleging that she had been forced to provide sexual services to numerous powerful figures in the media and business sectors. These letters, often referred to as the "Jang Ja-yeon documents", detailed the abuse she endured and named alleged perpetrators.
The investigation into her death and the allegations contained in the documents were highly controversial and drew significant public scrutiny. The initial investigation and subsequent reinvestigations faced criticism for being inadequate and failing to hold the alleged perpetrators fully accountable. While some individuals were investigated, none were successfully prosecuted for sexual abuse. Only her manager and CEO of her agency were found guilty of assault and defamation, respectively, but these were related to the handling of her contracts and not the sexual abuse allegations.
The Jang Ja-yeon case remains a symbol of the challenges faced by many aspiring actresses and female entertainers in South Korea, particularly regarding power imbalances and the potential for abuse within the industry. The case continues to be revisited and debated, with calls for further investigation and justice for Jang Ja-yeon. It highlighted the need for greater protections for artists and reforms within the entertainment industry to prevent such abuses from happening again.
